old dog, new tricks

To
I would like to firstly say how frustrated i am when i realised that i can't open or do something related to teaching. I am a maths guy and i ussually i know how to solve problems relating to the subject matter. With the webquest and websites its a different situation all together. learning new stuff when you are old with responsible is not an easy task. You have to work hard than when you were young. It is also expensive to learn. My question to my colleagues is, how do you cope with all this? The lectures do what they think is enough to help us but sometimes its not. I also realised that i have to collaborate a lot with different educators at school or at UJ. The problem is there is no time. How do you win?

I think that the difference with when we were young is that we were adventurous and curious in nature. Hence I say that Digital literacy should be one of the fundamentals when training to be an educator. I also concur with you on the time-factor. The B.Ed Hons programme is run as though we are full time students, and the inverse is true. Lesson preps, marking and portfolio admin are some of the many resposibilities that we are faced with.

Inconsistent access to a stable internet, and a phalanx of tasks given by variety of leaturers at clustered time frames make it even harder. ICT lessons should be allocated fixed time, like the 1st 2 or 3 months with Maseko, followed by Diseko, and so on. It will alleviate clustered work.

I even compromised my Gym time to update my work... Let us digitally interact to help ease the load.

  2. I really like the group approach to this webquest activity as it was an eye-opener on the issue of using technology to collaborate on an activity. We must emphasise the use of webquests because they encourage sociocultural approach where activities are authentic and group work reign supreme.

  3. Hi Mos I'm in that boat, the other day I even sent an email to Mr Maseko to say if one was also given a manual booklet I don't think I would be having a problem that much. You know its easy to follow in lecture class but when one is alone Yo! its a hustle. One is done with webquest but I was stuck with blogspot until I got sorted. I wonder what is going to happen with Yola? hoping that I will survive it too... Oh by the time one is about to get help, I have to take off the hat of being a student and wear one of a mother. Sharp Dinah.
