Respect

Colleagues
I have been recently blown away by people who stay away from institutions of learning. Their commitment to learning. There is a group of educators who come from KZN, FREE State, LIMPOPO, etc...these are some of the educators who sacrifice a lot to study at institutions like UJ. They come by taxis, some by overnight transport just to get a qualification. Why is it that most of the people who stay just a couple of Kilometres away from these campuses do not take the opportunity with both hands? I also noticed that institutions like UJ, Pretoria University, Wits, etc are full of people who do not stay in or around Gauteng. Why is this? Is it that those who stay in Gauteng don't value education as much as those who stay in Gauteng, or there is something else that makes this picture the way it is?

  1. Hi Justimos, maybe you need to also check in other institutions outside Gauteng Province. you'll realise that those instutions are also flooded by people from Gauteng. It has come to my attention that most people would like to study far from their place of birth.

  2. Hi Justimo, I share the same sentiments with you that "why is it that people do not want to make use of the opportunities around them?"I tried all that I could to encourage my former colleagues but it was all in vain. Those poeple coming from outside Gsuteng gave me the courage when I was doing my MEd. I used to count the hours they spend on the road and I used those hours to study or search books from the library and believe me it worked for me. I also like your selfmotivation when you say you must research into this next year. Go ahead, you won't regret. Our country needs people like you. You are so positive and you have a clear vision. All the best

  3. Do you remember the saying that goes "you do not appreciate something until it is taken away" same. I share the same sentiments. Maybe it is because the institutions are easily available, accessible and within reach that those who are a stone throw away do not realise the value. The unfortunate part is, the institutions will never be taken away and the status quo will probably remain. Pity. Let us acknowledge the few who are making an effort, however insignificant the number is.

The unfortunate part is these institutions will never be taken away for people to appreciate and realise their value and the status quo will probably remain as you have noticed. Pity. Despite the perception, however insignificant the number we might think is, let us acknowledge the few who are making an effort.

  5. I put my hat off for them

I have also noticed that some of the educators at university of Johannesburg come as far as KZN, Free State and LIMPOPO.
They come by taxis, some by overnight transport just to get to university of Johannesburg. The distance they travel week in and out, surely this shows commitment for change, willingness to learn and develop to become good ambassadors, some do not have a place to sleep in Johannesburg so they arrive in the morning, attend from 8:30am to 16:00pm in the afternoon. Immediately after the contact session they have to travel back to their home place.
I agree with the above comment, institution in Johannesburg namely UJ, Wits and Pretoria University are crowded by people from other provinces. People in Johannesburg have the facilities at their exposal but are not utilizing this opportunity.
I think is about attitude, the will to change and become a better person in order to develop yourself and the community.
Keep it up and I hope you will make a difference in your community and society at large, particularly in schools where they are employed. But ultimately I now they will get spiritual fulfilled and happiness.
