National Department on FET (Tertiary Institutions)

To my Colleagues
I am interested in finding out what the national department of education's role is in terms of the curricullum in these institutions. The reason for my question is that there is a lot of differences in terms of the curricullum in these institution. I did my ACE with UJ and at that time i knew someone who was doing the same course with Potch University. We were doing two entirely different content yet the course was the same. Presently i know some educators who are doing Honours with Wits and UNISA and the same situation is prevailing. I am also questioning the quality of the certificates we receiving in these institutions. Are they internationally recognised.

  1. Hi Just-Ice

Me again, what a splendid opinion. I also have always wondered why the national department of education does have a minimal influence in the curricula offered in the teartiary institutions. But I think the reason is, there is a lot of competition within institutions of higher learning in terms of their curriculum to student intake, hence as a student one needs to make a research on the type of studies one needs to undertake and discover first which institution offers it best maybe basing your facts in the results of the programme of your choice per year, before registration.

The unfortunate part is, sometimes even after embarking on a particular research on an institution of choice, the hindrance will then be finances. Some of us are enrolled in this programme because the department has offered bursaries.

Different institutions, offer different quality of programmes. Some could be internationally recognised and others won't. The national department has no influence because they just provide these institutions with a very small percentage of subsidy. They then, depend on our fees to maintain all areas.

Out now, talk to you soon.

  2. You raised a very interesting issue, the Department need to come with a tangible programme to address this issue. I think we need to look at the institutions also on a social percepective. What role does such institution play in the broader society , what type of philosopy is driving the making of decisions in those institutions. So I think the socioeconomic issues in different institution plays a major role.

Provicial government are also different, Mabusi said that "some of us are enrolled in this programme because the Department has offered bursaries " Let me say that it is different. Iam doing the very same couurce also employed by the same School Act but the Department is not paying for me , Iam responsible for my payment. They said if we do scarce cources they will pay. I will finish my course this year without any help from the Department. If the role of the National Department in FET was clear like Moss is suggesting I think there won't be any disparity about the assistance that we are getting as student and the way in which the institutions are being funded.
