For the past several years post 1994, i have been questioning the role of unions in SA education system. I understand that as a member of the bagaining council, SADTU, NAPTOSA and other teacher unions debate issues before they are brought to the main stream where everyone has a right to comment. The question i have is that why is it that as a member of a union namely SADTU, i hear we are striking before the Branch or even the province has communicated with us? Recently as a member of SADTU, we were on strike and i heard it first on TV.
when it come to salary negotiotions, the employer will offer us a certain percentage and if we reject it, will unilaterally apply the offer, refer back to the then Ms Fraser Moleketi. The province who initiated the strike will earn their salary as it is because they don't get paid by the GDE and the poor members will face the deductions from the employer. Why is it that our unions don't invest our monthly contributions for incase we strike? If they were to cover our wages, it would be fair for both parties and it would give us more power. ARE our unions pushing their own mandate or ours? If ours, why is that we don't tell them to accept or reject offers but they tell us before we debate these offers? Guys, school me. Do Unions have real power to bring in meaningfull change ?

Yes,unions have real power to bring in meaningfull change ,remember were are the union ourselves.It is said that change must begin with us and our immediate enviroment.Understand the context of your question which is the confusion caused by people who are just interested in occupying positions rather than serving the suffering masses of our educators.
ReplyDeleteIt is only fair if not crucket that in third world countries like South Africa to have unions.The high power organization are filtrated by oppurtunistic and capitalist camarfluging under the comrade mask.These self centered cabals channel the wealth of this country to thier benefit.It is up to you and I members on the ground to rootout this carnibals
ReplyDeleteas and when we discover them.BBGM and RBGM are platform to raise for start, many of concerned comrades like you and I avoide them if not not excluded per power of vote at sites. Finally ,I will advice that one gets lates copy of ELRC contents of which are update relating to OSD and Salary negotiations. On the lighter note, man how would feel bieng given a labtop as part of you packages
